A Children's
Story
Mildred came along the following year. There
doesn't seem to have been anything remarkable about her
birth. As a little girl, she thought bugs were pretty and would catch them up so they could go live in the family's garden. Then our mother found out what she was doing and explained to her how bugs would eat up the garden; and, that they would have to be killed if they were found there! Mildred also liked babies and wanted one. Every baby she saw she would ask the mother if she could have it; but, she wasn't much impressed when Beverly came along. Like Walter and Mildred, Beverly was born at home too; and, she was the first newborn that Mildred had seen. Mildred thought she was ugly, all red and wrinkled! Our mother overheard Mildred and Walter talking. Mildred wanted to give Beverly away! But, Walter was telling her, with all his six year old wisdom "Now Mildred, let's not rush into
things. |
